Best Outfits & Colors to Wear for your Newborn Session

The number one question I get from clients after the book a newborn session with me is "what should I wear?" Every client who books with me receives a portrait guide that goes into depth about colors for wardrobe selections! The truth is, the colors you wear heavily influence how your images will turn out. I am a light & airy photographer, which means a lot of the colors you see in my portfolio have a consistent look- white, cream, pastels, light neutrals and earth tones are the color schemes that make my photos appear the way they do!

Since newborn sessions happen indoors, it's really important to wear light and neutral colors to help lighten your images and give them that breathy, airy feel. Here are my top tips for selecting your newborn session outfits!

  1. Light neutrals & white. White is a natural reflector and helps even out skin tones. It's the main reason I use white swaddles when I take individual photos of baby! White & light neutrals like cream, off white, beige, tan and light pastels show up beautifully on camera.

Flowy wrap dresses are nursing AND post partum friendly! I love photographing moms in beautiful, flowy dresses. I remember what it's like to be post partum and not wanting to wear anything too form fitting! I find that long wrap dresses are a beautiful option. I've also had post partum moms opt for jeans and a light colored, flowy top and that is also a great option if you don't have a wrap dress on hand!

If you have older siblings joining the photoshoot, I would recommend keeping them in lighter neutral colors! Navy is a great "filler" color, if you use it, use it sparingly (I love how this sweet family dressed in mainly white and used navy for just the boys! It's a great way to incorporate a darker color without overpowering the lighter colors in the image)

For every newborn shoot I do, I always have PLENTY of light colored swaddles and blankets on hand! I use them for every single shoot. I generally prefer to swaddle babies in just their diapers. If you want to incorporate an outfit for your baby, I would generally suggest keeping them in (you guessed it!) lighter colors! I also have a muted pink wrap that is an option! I am always slowly adding more carefully curated colors to my collection.

Picking outfits for your newborn shoot doesn't need to be complicated! As long as you stay on the lighter side of the color spectrum, your images will look consistent with the rest of my portfolio. When in doubt, think light!
